Documentation

Everything you need to get started with Perceptron.

Quick Start

1

Download and Install

Download Perceptron and run the installer. Follow the prompts to complete installation.

2

Launch Perceptron

Open Perceptron from your Start menu or desktop shortcut. The application will automatically detect your network interface.

3

Start a Scan

Click the Scan button to discover devices on your network. Perceptron will use multiple protocols (mDNS, SNMP, DNS, MAC lookup) to identify devices.

4

View Results

Results appear as devices are discovered. You'll see device names, manufacturers, types, IP addresses, and MAC addresses—far more detail than basic scanners provide.

System Requirements

Windows

  • Windows 10 (64-bit) or later
  • 4 GB RAM minimum
  • ~100 MB disk space

macOS

  • macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later
  • Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4)
  • ~100 MB disk space

Note: Self-contained app—no additional runtime installation required. Admin privileges recommended for full network scanning capabilities.

Discovery Protocols

Perceptron uses multiple discovery protocols to provide comprehensive device identification:

mDNS / Bonjour

Discovers devices advertising services via multicast DNS. Great for finding Apple devices, printers, smart home devices, and other Bonjour-enabled hardware.

SNMP

Queries network devices for detailed information. Identifies managed switches, routers, printers, and other enterprise equipment with rich metadata.

DNS Reverse Lookup

Resolves IP addresses to hostnames using your network's DNS server. Works well in corporate environments with proper DNS infrastructure.

MAC Vendor Database

Identifies device manufacturers from MAC address prefixes. Even when other methods fail, you'll know if that device is from Apple, Dell, Intel, or thousands of other vendors.

Tips for Best Results

Run as Administrator for full network access and more complete discovery results.

Wait for scan completion—some protocols take longer but reveal devices that quick scans miss.

Scan regularly to catch new devices appearing on your network.

Check your firewall—some firewalls may block discovery protocols. Allow Perceptron through for best results.

Uninstalling

Perceptron can be completely removed at any time. All settings and scan history are stored locally and will be removed with the application.
